A ship which has no sisters, was built in 1978 by A. Vuyk & Zonen by account of the Swiss company Transoceanique Suisse Compagnie de Navigation. Despite being the home land of “Alinghi”, Switzerland is not a land of sea and mariners, so the ship was engaged in the charter market, sailing almost every European seas in her 29 years of life: North Sea for P&O, Fred. Olsen, North Sea Ferries and Ferryways; Baltic Sea for DFDS Lisco and Bornholmstraffiken, Thyrrenian Sea for Armament Cotier and also the Atlantic Ocean for LD Lines, before being sold to Aegean Cargo of Kostas Agapitos. For the latter company, she links Piraeus with Cyprus and Middle East, carrying the name “Aegean Glory” which was already used by another ro/ro in Agapitos fleet. Often deployed also on routes from France to Africa during charter service, during Spring 2010 many rumours about her scrapping are spreading, but until now, no more news are heard about it. Finally the ship was chartered on May 2010 for a long trip from France to Liberia, Mauritius, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, but the trip was interrupted on June 26th, when the “Aegean Glory” was arrested in Kolkata. This decision was taken because the ship was carrying military cargo previously employed in the UN peace-keeping mission in Liberia by Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepalese armies, but without advising Indian Port Authorities that this cargo was taken on a merchant ship, while Indian army usually makes these dangerous shipments on its own naval ships. After it was made clear that the military cargo was not destined to terrorists, the “Aegean Glory” was released early in July 2010 to continue her trip and to reach Greece at the end of August. Laid up until April 2011, was then moored at Kynossoura yards of Salamina to be overhauled, it seems for a new charter.
