“THE SCHOOL REPORT”

Always in our past years we remember a characteristical thing of our school: the report!!! So I decided to try giving a mark to the ferry companies, considering the former year of service, the 2004; sine this report the marks will be reviewed every six months, considering the new facts and the prospective. Hope that you would like this new section!

IMPORTANT: THE PRESENT MARKS ARE BASED ON OBJECTIVE FACTS, BUT ALSO ON PERSONAL OPINIONS; THEY AREN’T A QUALITY VALUE BECAUSE I’VE NOT THE NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE TO VALUE A FERRY SERVICE.

Name

Mark

Notes

Adria Ferries

5,5

(6)

The “Riviera Adriatica” is chartered again; this wouldn’t be a great problem if the “Riviera del Conero” weren’t stopped by frequent mechanical troubles

Aegean Speed Lines

8

(6,5)

Finally the “SpeedRunner 1” finds a mate, the “Speedrunner II”, awaited on Piraeus Paros Naxos Santorini line. A fine move!

Agoudimos Lines

7

(8)

The winter refits of ships engaged on Bari service was long, forcing the company to operate with a single ship for long times. Nothing new on other services.

Anek Lines

3

(5)

In the summer season where NEL and Hellenic Seaways are attacking ANEK monopoly on Chania and Rethymnon lines, ANEK management surprisingly decides to charter the Cretan services flagships to Cotunav and Algerie Ferries, offering for Cretan sailings a fleet which has the “Prevelis” as the most interesting ferry. This uncomprehensible statements came after the missed purchase of the “Hestia”, and, while newer ferries are far from the company, Grimaldi Naples group acquires a 14% stake in the company. Would this help?

Blue Star Ferries

8

(7,5)

With the Summer Blue Star Ferries increases her connections to Paros, Naxos, Patmos, Leros, Astypalea and Kalymnos, and adds between its destinations Karpathos, Nissiros and Tilos. Very good.

Endeavor Lines

7

(7)

Unique operator connecting Brindisi with Patras, sailing with the ferries “Elli T.” and “Erotokritos T.”

European Seaways

6

This brand disappeared  at the beginning of 2000’s and is now back on Brindisi Corfu Igoumenitsa line, replacing Fragline with the mythic “Apollon”, a ferry which is well suitable for this service.

Fast Ferries

6,5

After many years spent between Corfu and Igoumenitsa, the company started operating in Aegean Sea with the superb “Theologos P”; unfortunately anyway the “Platitera” left us to Italy.

Fragline

4

(6,5)

After having published the 2007 timetables, the company sold the “Ouranos” and announced that the services for 2007 seasons are suspended. It seems that the company should come back in 2008, but I don’t believe too much this rumour.

G.A. Ferries

3

(3)

The new livery is smart, but the company needs other things rather than a livery

Hellenic Seaways

7

(6,5)

The services offered on Samos line, Chios-Mytilini line and Chania line, effected by the new ferries, are far competitive, and this is not enough: we should not forget the Argosaronicos services, the fast crafts “Highspeed” and the classic departure of 22.00 for “Paronaxia”, this year effected by the “Express Pegasus”, a more flexible ferry rather those who preceded her on that route.

Jadrolinija

6,5

(6,5)

As always, the same service, waiting for some new facts. What we should add to these words?

Kallisti Ferries

6

Another interesting entry in Aegean seas, the joint venture between Spanos and Pascal Lota, which brings to Greece the HSC Corsica Express Three. Anyway the timetable is not too interesting.

Lane Lines

6

(6,5)

Only the “Visentzos Kornaros” is sailing on LANE timetables; the “Ierapetra L.” is at disposal of ANEK.

Marlines

4

(4)

Nothing new: the “Duchess M” on her classic Bari Durres line.

Minoan Lines

5

(4)

After viewing again the right ferries in the right places, we expect something from Minoan Lines. Let’s see.

Nel Lines

5,5

(5,5)

After the merger with C-Link the services are growing up, but the company still lacks newer vessels on Piraeus Chios Mytilini service.

Saos Ferries

6

(6)

A fleet composed by ten vessels, of which eight in service, plus another one arriving from Japan. But I think that we should expect something better.

Sem Maritime Co. - Blue Line

4,5

(4,5)

The well known sisters of the company on international services and the little “Split Prvi” on domestic Routes. Anyway the “Split 1700” is asking the retirement

Strintzis Ferries

7,5

(7,5)

Two ferries serving Cephalonia.

Superfast Ferries

5

(5)

The new cut on services is not good, but anyway Superfast seems to offer the best Italy Greece service. Long life to them.

Tirrenia divisione Adriatica

3

(3)

Finally a “Nuove Strada” class ferry is serving Albania. Anyway the service is not entirely convincing

Ventouris A.K. C-Link

--

Merged with Nel Lines.

Ventouris Ferries

3,5

(3,5)

As always, Bari Durres, Bari Corfu Igoumenitsa, “Athens”, “Siren”, “Polaris, “Ionis”.

Ventouris Sea Lines

6

(6,5)

The company had some problems due to the breakdowns of the “Agios Georgios”.
