Apart of the smaller “Aethalia” of Navigazione Toscana, the “Appia” was the first Italian roll-on/roll-of ferry. Launched on 25/09/1960 for Adriatica, was delivered in 1961, deployed on BrindisiCorfuIgoumenitsa – Patras service sailing on alternate days with the “Egnatia” of Hellenic Mediterranean Lines. She remained on this line for almost all her life, even after the “divorce” from Hellenic Mediterranean Lines, except for brief spells on other services: in 1963 was deployed on few trips between Genoa and Porto Torres, in provision of launching a ro/ro service also on Tyrrhenian Sea; in January 1974 she replaced the traditional ship used on Trieste – Venice – Bari – Famagusta – Beyruth – Smirne line; in 1983 was used to transport refugees from Lebanon to Cyprus, chartered by Italian Ministry of Defence; finally, in her last years under Adriatica banners, was employed also on Ancona – Yugoslavia services. At the end of 1991 Summer was laid up at Bari, later replaced on Greek services by the “Laurana”, awaiting to be sold; in 1992 was renamed “Fibi”, purchased by Indian interests, sailing around India until 1995, when she was sold for scrap at her 34 year of life.
