This is the
first of a serie of four ro/ro
ships built in the middle of 70’s by Orlando yards of
Leghorn; the ferries were built for the account of the yard itself, then bought
by the Italian Ministry of Economy for Adriatica (the
first pair) and Lloyd Triestino (the second pair).
The first ferry of the serie took the name “Corriere dell’Ovest”; the
delivery cerimonial was officiated by the Patriarch
of Venice, Albino Luciani, to whom this page is
dedicated. This could be a surprising fact, for a friend who knows me, but I
wanted to remember the meeting between this ship and a great man of these
times, which is shown with a photo, a man which deserves to be remembered for
his goodness, his simplicity, his
humility, continously shown even wearing the white livery
of the Pope. Being elected after Paul VI, considered by many people as a great
pope, and forerunner of another great pope, John Paul II, I think that he could
have been far greater than these two popes, if her pontificate weren’t of only
33 days, ending the night between 28th and 29th September 1978, officially for
an heart attack. Anyway around the death of John Paul I there are some
speculations, and between these also the homicide. And I wonder how he felt at
the delivery of the “Corriere dell’Ovest”,
being so shy…anyway as long as the pontificate of John Paul I was very short,
also the career of the “Corriere dell’Ovest”
was short, lasting in Adriatica Fleet only four years
before of her sale to Grimaldi. For Adriatica was sailing from
Venice and Trieste to Piraeus, Lattakia, Port Said, Limassol,
Aqaba, Beirut, then under Grimaldi ownership was
lenghtened until reaching
