TRIVIA / CURIOSITÀ

·         Arkadia Lines was established in 1990 by the merger of various companies, of which the ship names were maintained: “Paloma” and “Silver Paloma” were distinctive names of Afroessa Lines, “Naxos”, “Paros” and “Samaina” were used by the locally-based companies which were operating these ferries earlier.

·         Even if Afroessa Lines was a dominant player on Greece – Cyprus – Israel line, Arkadia Lines left this market after only three years, some years before this route would become unpopular due to the Israeli situation.

·        The Greece – Italy line of the company originally was PatrasIgoumenitsa – Corfu – Bari, serving also the domestic services on this route; from 1993 anyway, being the “Dimitrios Express” the only ferry able to perform domestic routes on Adriatic line, the Greece – Italy line was reduced to Igoumenitsa – Bari until its end, which came in 1996.

·         The 35-year old age limit for passenger ferries, which was applied in Greece until few years before today, was applied for two times in Arkadia Lines fleet: in 1993 for the “Silver Paloma” and in 1998 for the “Samaina”. The first time it happened, the ferry was operated for another two years on international routes under Greek flag and for the last year under Maltese flag before a five-year lay-up and the scrap, the second time the ferry was directly laid up for two years before the sale to the breakers. In both these cases, the route these ferries were operating was closed with their lay-up.

·         Both the “Poseidons” of the fleet, as the famous “Poseidon” of the movie, were involved in serious accidents, both at Paros, but if the “Poseidon Express” in 1996 was declared a total constructive loss, ending early her career, the “Poseidon Express 2” in 1999 was salvaged and returned to active service. In both cases there were no victims.

In nessun caso vi sono state vittime.
